Weight loss is a goal for many of us striving for better health and well-being. Medications like Ozempic and Rybelsus have gained plenty of media attention for their potential role in weight management. In this article, we decode the science behind these medications for weight loss, highlighting the similarities and differences between them.

Understanding Ozempic and Rybelsus

Novo Nordisk developed both medications, Ozempic and Rybelsus, and the FDA approved them to treat type 2 diabetes. They belong to a class of drugs called the GLP 1 receptor agonist. GLP 1 medication works by stimulating insulin production and reducing the blood sugar level in patients with type 2 diabetes.

The Benefits

Blood Sugar Control

One of the primary benefits of both Ozempic and Rybelsus is their ability to lower blood sugar levels effectively. By stimulating insulin production and reducing glucagon secretion, these medications help maintain blood sugar control.

They reduce HbA1c by approximately 1 to 2 percentage points in clinical studies. The HbA1c test or haemoglobin A1c test is a blood test that measures your average blood sugar level over the past two to three months. Reducing HbA1c levels is associated with a reduced risk of diabetes-related complications.

Weight Management

Another significant advantage of Ozempic and Rybelsus is their impact on body weight. Clinical studies have shown that patients using these medications often experience weight loss. This marks a groundbreaking discovery, as traditional diabetes medications are known to cause weight gain. The development of Ozempic and Rybelsus provides valuable treatment options for patients struggling with both diabetes and obesity or overweight conditions.

In comparison to current diabetes medication, Ozempic and Rybelsus achieve better glucose control and can promote significant weight loss. The American Diabetes Association now recommends GLP 1 medication like Ozempic and Rybelsus as one of two first-line medications for type 2 diabetes.

How Does Ozempic and Rybelsus Help You Lose Weight?

Being medications for diabetes management, you may wonder how Ozempic and Rybelsus work to help people with diabetes lose weight.

Appetite Suppression: One of the primary mechanisms underlying the weight loss effects of Ozempic and Rybelsus is appetite suppression. By activating GLP-1 receptors in the brain, these medications signal feelings of fullness and reduce hunger, leading to reduced calorie intake.

Delayed Gastric Emptying: GLP 1 receptor agonist also slows down gastric emptying, which can prolong feelings of fullness after meals. This delay in gastric emptying contributes to decreased food intake and may facilitate weight loss over time.

It is important to note that not all people with type 2 diabetes lose weight with Ozempic and Rybelsus in clinical trials. While many people in the clinical trial lose weight, some did gain weight as well.

Comparing Ozempic and Rybelsus

Ozempic and Rybelsus both contain the same active ingredient semaglutide. Here we highlight the similarities and key differences between them.

Effectiveness: Clinical studies have shown significant reductions in HbA1c levels with both Ozempic and Rybelsus, along with improvements in weight management. The key difference is that researchers found Ozempic to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes.

In addition to reducing blood sugar levels, Ozempic is also approved by the FDA to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke or death in patients with type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Administration: One of the key differences between Ozempic and Rybelsus lies in their administration methods. While Ozempic requires weekly subcutaneous injections, Rybelsus offers the convenience of oral administration. This makes Rybelsus tablets a more convenient option for some patients who prefer an oral medication over an injection.

Rybelsus is the first GLP-1 receptor agonist to be available in a tablet form.

Considerations for Use

While Ozempic and Rybelsus show promise as weight loss medications, it should be noted that they are not solely designed for weight loss. Before starting treatment, several considerations should be taken into account.

These medications are typically prescribed to people with type 2 diabetes who struggle with obesity or are overweight. If you do not have type 2 diabetes, there are other GLP-1 medications designed for weight loss like Wegovy and Saxenda. Our doctors at Sire can help navigate your weight loss journey with you.

Adverse Effects: Common side effects of Ozempic and Rybelsus include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, particularly during the initial treatment period. Both Ozempic and Rybelsus are prescription medication and should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider.

Long-term Safety Concerns: The long-term safety of GLP 1 medication like Ozempic and Rybelsus has not been fully established. This is because these medications are new and the majority of clinical trials are less than five years in duration. Major safety concerns include the risk of thyroid cancer and mental health effects.
