When do men start aging? The answer is every day.

We tend to think of aging as a process of decline, but it’s not necessary so black-and-white. In fact, a man experiences different phases of growth and development followed by a decline in health and wellness later in life.

But first, an FAQ with Dr. Bosty Chan, Founder of SIRE.

Men’s aging FAQ

What age do men go through menopause?

Dr. Bosty Chan: Men go through andropause (male menopause) in their 40s.

After your 30s, testosterone levels decline by 1% each year. This drop in testosterone leads to physical and mental health challenges for men between 45 to 55.

What age do men stop growing?

Dr. Bosty Chan: You might be a late bloomer, but it is unlikely for boys to grow significantly after the ages of 18 to 20.

Most boys reach their peak height around the age of 16. However, those muscles continue to develop.

Peak muscle mass occurs between the ages of 20 and 30 years, it naturally declines as one ages.

What age do men stop being sexually active?

Dr. Bosty Chan: Research suggests that most men stop having sex around 75 to 85 years of age.

Old couples having sex is NOT a myth.

Most men remain sexually active well into retirement age.

At what age do men stop producing sperm?

Dr. Bosty Chan: Typically, men never stop producing sperm.

The oldest man to father a child in the books of the Guinness World Records was at the age of 92.

However, there is a measurable decline in sperm quality as a man ages

What age do men physically mature?

Dr. Bosty Chan: Boys normally reach their peak height around the age of 16.

Research has found that the brain does not fully develop until the age of 25.

This is thought to be the age where men reach full physical maturity, since the brain is fully developed..

What age do men emotionally mature?

Dr. Bosty Chan: There is no definitive link between emotional maturity and age.

Emotional maturity is often open to different cultural interpretations – you would probably get a different response your spouse or close friends as compared to your colleagues

However, one British study indicated that men reached emotional maturity around 43.

What age do men start balding?

Dr. Bosty Chan: There is no normal age at which men usually start balding.

Male-pattern baldness can begin at almost any age and can progress at different rates.

The earlier treatment is sought, the more hair you can save.

At what age are men most attractive?

Dr. Bosty Chan: Typically, men peak in attractiveness when they are 25-35 years old. However, the age men are most attractive can significantly vary.

Generally, studies reveal women prefer similar-aged or somewhat older men regardless of the female’s age.

With women settling down at a later age in Singapore, the age where men are found to be the most attractive would likely increase.

At what age do men stop ejaculating?

Dr. Bosty Chan: There is no specific age when men stop ejaculating.

Lower ejaculate force and volume can be expected as you age.

What age do men go grey?

Dr. Bosty Chan: There is a famous 50/50/50 rule of thumb which states that ‘at age 50 years, 50% of the population has at least 50% grey hair’.

A worldwide survey reveals that Asians typically start turning grey in the late 30s.

At what age do men grow beards?

Dr. Bosty Chan: Most boys first notice facial hair between the ages of 13-16 years.

On average, men’s facial hair will only become visible around 18.

It can even delay up to the early 20s to get the increased facial coverage.

At what age do boys become men?

Dr. Bosty Chan: When do we go from “ah boys to men”?

We would like to leave this open to interpretation.

Well, all male Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents, unless exempted, are required to serve the National Service (NS) upon reaching 18 years old.

And yes, that is the legal drinking age as well.

What age should men get a colonoscopy?

Dr. Bosty Chan: A colonoscopy to screen for colorectal cancer should begin at age 50 years for individuals without any risk factors in Singapore.

Colorectal cancer is the most common cancer in Singapore. We also have the highest age-standardised incidence of rectal cancer in the world.

Screening earlier than the recommended age is advised in individuals with a strong family history of colorectal cancer or a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease.

What age do men go through midlife crisis?

Dr. Bosty Chan: Midlife crisis is a term first described by psychologist Elliott Jaques in 1965 – it is described as “a transition of identity and self-confidence that can occur in middle-aged individuals, typically 40 to 60 years old”

It typically lasts about 3-10 years in men.

Dr. Bosty Chan: Climacteric aka menopause. Men experience that, too.

Men go through andropause (male menopause) in their 40s.

After your 30s, testosterone levels decline by 1% each year. This drop in testosterone leads to physical and mental health challenges for men between 45 to 55.

At what age do men become impotent?

Dr. Bosty Chan: Impotence refers to erectile dysfunction (ED), a condition when a penis is unable to get or keep an erection for sexual intercourse.

ED is common among Singaporean men and can happen at any age.

47.1% of Singaporean men aged 30-39 surveyed reported some degree of ED.

The prevalence and severity of ED increases significantly with age after 50 years old.

What age should men get a prostate exam?

Dr. Bosty Chan: In Singapore, prostate cancer is the third most common cancer in men.

There are currently no standard guidelines to screen for prostate cancer.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends prostate cancer screening in men at age 50 who are at average risk and are expected to live at least 10 more years. Screening at an earlier age is recommended for men who are at a higher risk.

What age do men need Viagra?

Dr. Bosty Chan: Viagra (sildenafil) is a safe and effective prescription medication for the treatment of ED.

Pfizer, the company that manufactures this medication reported that the typical Viagra user is on average 53 years old. The company does not keep records of users younger than 33 years.

However, ED is common in Singapore and can happen at any age.

A timeline of men’s aging from birth to 70+

Let’s look at how men change as they age.

Why are you a man?

When the sperm enters the egg inside the mother’s uterus, there are two possibilities whether the embryo carries both XX chromosomes, which will be a baby girl. While if XY chromosomes unite, they result in a baby boy.

Teenage years (10-19)

This decade is full of thrills, with increased sexual interest and exploration due to puberty.

Puberty is a major phenomenon occurring in the second decade of men’s life, on average, it happens between 10 to 13 years of age.

Hormonal changes and secondary sexual characteristics:

Elevated testosterone levels create secondary sexual characteristics in men.

During puberty, boys experience various physical and hormonal changes, including a growth spurt, body hair growth, voice changes, muscle development, sexual development, acne, and emotional changes.

The extent and timing of these changes can vary among boys and may be influenced by genetics and overall health.

Learning about sexual health and the reproductive system is a major milestone achieved during this decade.

ORD lo! You’re a young adult (20-29)

In your 20s, your libido, body growth, and sexual stamina grows.

Physiological changes:

During this time, testosterone levels stay at their highest for a man’s life which begins to decline afterwards.

Strong erections, high sperm count, increased muscle mass, endurance, and stable mood with maturity are prominent features during these years.

  • Continued muscle growth and development during the early years of the decade.
  • Increase in bone density.
  • Gradual decline in metabolism.
  • Development of facial hair.
  • Development of sexual function
  • Changes in skin, including the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Increased risk of injury due to risky behaviours and physical activities.
  • Risks of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Learning about safe sex practices.

Entering into your 30s

From age 30-39, testosterone levels start to decline, leading to a gradual decrease in sexual desire and function. Research shows a gradual decline of 1% in testosterone levels each year.

There is an increased risk of erectile dysfunction and prostate problems. Low testosterone levels may lead to a reduced sex drive, weariness, decreased muscle mass and strength, and reduced bone density.

Sexual health maintenance, including regular STI screenings and seeking medical assistance for sexual problems, helps avoid possible sexually transmitted diseases.

Men’s 40s: the andropause years

There is a decreased testosterone level leading to physical and emotional changes. This period has potential risks of erectile dysfunction, and prostate problems occur due to decreased testosterone levels.

As men enter their 40s and 50s, they may experience physical changes in their health.

These changes include a decrease in muscle mass and strength, an increased risk of chronic diseases, decreased bone density, changes in sexual function, and changes in sleep patterns.

These changes can be reduced by maintaining a healthy lifestyle like a balanced diet and regular exercise.

Andropause:

Andropause is a major phenomenon seen during the period. Andropause is a menopause-like condition that affects men as they age and is characterized by a gradual decline in testosterone levels. During this time, libido and health decline, and hair starts turning grey.

Changes during age 50-59

Men experience different health-related changes. Men may experience changes in their sexual function, including a decreased sex drive, difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, and decreased semen volume. Many men lose their interest in sex to a greater extent during this decade.

It is important to state that not all men will experience these changes, and some may experience them to a greater degree than others.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and regular check-ups with a healthcare provider, can help reduce the risk of these changes.

Changes during age 60-69

After the age of 60, men experience a drastic decrease in libido and immunity. There is an increased susceptibility to multiple infections and diseases.

During these years, there are high chances of prostate cancer, erectile dysfunction, muscle mass, bone density loss, joint pain and stiffness, increased risk of heart disease, declining vision and hearing, prostate gland enlargement, and sexual problems.

Changes after the 70s

There is a marked decrease in sexual desire due to aging and health conditions. Different health problems and disabilities may impact sexual health after the 70s.

Erectile dysfunction, decreased erection frequency, low seminal fluid, and diminished sex drive are evident after age 70. Delayed ejaculation and prostate conditions are common after this age.

Lifestyle modifications to cope with age-associated changes:

The following lifestyle modifications help lessen and delay age-associated changes.

  • Regular exercise helps keep metabolism in balance.
  • A balanced diet alleviates age-related body changes.
  • Stress management helps maintain mental health.
  • Quit smoking and limit alcohol intake to maintain a healthy immune system.
  • Take supplements with the guidance of a physician.
  • Hormone replacement therapy to cope with hormone deficiency with age.
